Our WI thrives through a WhatsApp community and all of the subgroups can be found there, giving our members the opportunity to keep the conversations going outside of our meetings. In order to get the best as a member and stay up to date with all of the events and activities being organised, we strongly recommend joining the WhatsApp groups. Below is a very brief rundown of all the groups we have currently:

Mermaid Makers

The Mermaid Makers is a chance for our members to come together to get creative, make and more often than not, learn something new. 

It meets once a month and members can bring along a work in progress, or get involved with any craft activities underway for particular Margate WI projects throughout the year.

Green-fingered Gals

Whether you’re a novice or an expert, this group is for all our members who want to share their love of plants and gardening. Activities include plant and seed swaps, garden visits, sharing top tips and offering support to those who either provide the kiss of death to any plant which comes into their home, or congratulations to members when they discover something alive and flourishing in the garden.

Thank Mermaid It’s Friday

Otherwise known as TMI Friday – this subgroup is for those who have free time on a Friday and fancy meeting up to do something social, such as go for a meal, visit an art exhibition, or team up for a fun activity like Crazy Golf.

The Mermaid Readers

Put aside the ironing and other mundane chores and pop along to a meeting of the Mermaid Readers to pick up some book recommendations. Members will meet and chat about their latest reads while enjoying a drink down the pub.

The Clam-paigners

Yes, we admit it, it is a groan-worthy pun on a seaside theme for this subgroup which meets and organises the finer details of our campaigns.

The Mermaids Get Trashed

This subgroup focuses on organising litter picks in and around Margate’s green spaces, in a nod to the original WI campaign of 1954 which led to the creation of Keep Britain Tidy.

Margate WI Mermaids

Brave the North Sea with our mermaids! They meet daily for a morning swim, mainly at Walpole Bay Tidal Pool… whatever the weather, and whatever the temperature! Brrr…

And finally…

Not technically a subgroup but we are thrilled to have teamed up with The Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury to offer discounted theatre tickets to selected shows when we book as a group. Friends and family are welcome as part of your booking. Previously we have seen incredible performances in Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake and Romeo & Juliet plus the hilarious Christmas panto, Mother Goose!
